SEO agency monthly pricing snapshot
The broadest monthly benchmark in the Ahrefs SEO pricing survey covered 439 SEO service providers. For its 2023 survey, on a page updated August 15, 2024, the average SEO price was $2,917 per month. Providers typically charged between $250 and $10,000 monthly.
The distribution shows why an average alone can be misleading. Among businesses in the Ahrefs dataset, 63% spent between $500 and $5,000 per month on SEO. The most common monthly retainer band was $501–$1,000, reported by 20.4% of respondents. Looking at providers rather than businesses, 42.8% charged $501–$2,000 per month, while 68.8% charged $2,000 or less.
The SE Ranking agency pricing survey provides a separate 2024 view, published December 13, 2024. Its dataset combined 170 survey responses with pricing information for 90 Agency Catalog agencies, for 260 agencies total. In that dataset, 64% charged below $1,000 per month, including 30% charging less than $500.
| Monthly pricing measure | Result | Source period |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs average SEO price | $2,917 | 2023 survey; updated August 15, 2024 |
| Ahrefs providers charging $2,000 or less | 68.8% | 2023 survey; updated August 15, 2024 |
| Ahrefs most common band, $501–$1,000 | 20.4% | 2023 survey; updated August 15, 2024 |
| SE Ranking agencies below $1,000 | 64% | 2024 survey; published December 13, 2024 |
| SE Ranking agencies below $500 | 30% | 2024 survey; published December 13, 2024 |
These results are not directly interchangeable. Ahrefs surveyed 439 providers and manually reviewed their websites; some provider averages were tier-upper-bound estimates rather than invoice-weighted means. SE Ranking’s sample included 94% serving small or local businesses and 78% representing agencies with fewer than 10 people. The different samples and methods help explain why their distributions should be read as separate benchmarks.
SEO agency hourly-rate benchmarks
Hourly pricing also clusters below the highest reported rates. Ahrefs measured an average hourly SEO rate of $111 in its 2023 survey. The most common band was $75–$100, used by 24% of respondents. Overall, 47% of providers charged between $75 and $200 per hour, and 90% charged $150 or less. Only 4.1% charged $201 or more.
SE Ranking’s 2024 survey reported a lower concentration at the entry and mid-market end: 45% of agencies priced hourly SEO work between $50 and $100, and 60% set hourly rates below $100. The result describes agency pricing in that dataset, rather than a universal market rate.
Two broader pricing references add context but are not identical to the SEO-only surveys. Clutch’s SEO agency pricing page, measured in September 2026, places most agency hourly rates at $100–$149. Clutch uses verified client-review pricing data. The 2025 Digital Agency Industry Report from Promethean Research covers broader digital agencies rather than SEO-only agencies; rates reported for 2025 showed 36% charging $175–$199 per hour and 32% charging $200–$249.
The comparison is therefore most useful as a measurement map: SEO-specific surveys place much of the observed distribution below $150, while broader digital-agency and client-review datasets include higher-rate segments.
SEO agency project-fee benchmarks
Project fees have a wide spread because a single project can represent very different scopes. In the Ahrefs 2023 survey, the most common per-project SEO fee band was $2,501–$5,000, reported by 21.2% of respondents. Overall, 60.6% of providers charged at least $1,001 per project, while 50.6% charged $2,000 or less.
Ahrefs estimated average per-project fees of $9,507.84 for agencies, $8,685.53 for consultancies, and $2,348.63 for freelancers. These are estimates from the survey’s pricing bands and should not be treated as invoice-weighted averages.
SE Ranking’s 2024 project-fee distribution was concentrated lower. Approximately 66% of agencies charged $500–$2,000 per project: 38% charged $500–$1,000, and 28% charged $1,000–$2,000. As with monthly and hourly comparisons, the two datasets describe different samples.
For a reader evaluating a quote, the band matters as much as the headline average. A fee of $500–$1,000 and a fee above $2,000 can both fall within observed survey distributions, but they do not identify the same scope, provider type, or level of specialization. The supplied benchmarks quantify the price ranges; they do not establish what work each provider included.
Regional and provider-type pricing differences
Provider type produces some of the clearest differences in the Ahrefs 2023 data. Average monthly retainers were $3,209 for agencies, $3,250 for consultancies, and $1,348.63 for freelancers. Average hourly rates were $98.90 for agencies, $171.18 for consultancies, and $71.59 for freelancers.
The share charging more than $1,000 per month also varied: 57.4% of agencies, 70.6% of consultants, and 32.2% of freelancers exceeded that threshold. These measures point in the same direction as the provider-type averages, but they do not show whether the difference came from scope, positioning, client mix, geography, or another factor.
| Provider type | Average monthly retainer | Average hourly rate | More than $1,000 monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agency | $3,209 | $98.90 | 57.4% |
| Consultancy | $3,250 | $171.18 | 70.6% |
| Freelancer | $1,348.63 | $71.59 | 32.2% |
Local and worldwide market positioning showed another gap in Ahrefs’ 2023 survey. Average local-market SEO retainers were $1,557.08 per month, compared with $3,473.74 for worldwide-market providers. For local SEO specifically, average retainers were $1,819 for agencies and about $1,150 for freelancers.
SE Ranking’s 2024 geographic comparison found that 40% of U.S. and Canadian agencies charged above $125 per hour, compared with 6% of European agencies. At the lower end, 23% of U.S. and Canadian agencies charged below $75 per hour, compared with 47% of European agencies. These figures describe the survey’s regional groups and should not be generalized to every agency in either region.
Agency size, experience, and pricing changes
In Ahrefs’ 2023 survey, time in business tracked with higher average monthly retainers. Providers in business for two years or less averaged $1,540.52 per month. Providers in business more than two years averaged $2,023.13, while those in business five to ten years averaged $3,648.28.
Hourly rates followed a similar pattern across the reported experience bands. Providers in business two years or less averaged $73.05 per hour, compared with $97.11 for those in business two to four years. The average was $102.03 for providers in business five to ten years and $118.35 for providers in business more than ten years.
SE Ranking’s 2024 survey also captured pricing changes. Thirty-two percent of agencies had recently increased pricing. Looking ahead to 2025, 38% planned to raise rates, while 30% preferred unchanged rates. Among respondents raising prices, 28% cited inflation and higher living costs, and 25% cited improved expertise and value proposition.
Agency headcount was associated with higher pricing in the SE Ranking data. Among agencies with 25 or more employees, more than 70% charged over $1,000 monthly, over $100 hourly, and over $2,000 per project. By contrast, only 14% of agencies managing five or fewer projects charged above-average rates. These are associations within the survey, not evidence that staffing or project volume alone determines a quote.
SEO packaging and broader agency pricing benchmarks
Retainers were the most commonly preferred pricing model in SE Ranking’s 2024 survey: 53% of participants preferred monthly retainers, while 80% listed retainers alongside other pricing models. Packaging was also widespread, with 85% of agencies bundling SEO services into packages.
SEO was often sold alongside other digital services. Nearly 93% of agencies offered SEO together with PPC, social media marketing, web design, and website maintenance. This broader service mix matters when comparing an SEO-only quote with a bundled digital-agency proposal because the listed price may cover more than search optimization.
AI-search services were an emerging packaging category in the same survey. Sixty-one percent of agencies were considering adding optimization for AI-driven search engines. Of all respondents, 43% planned to integrate AI-search optimization into existing offerings, while 18% planned to sell it as an extra service. SE Ranking reported an average intended or finalized monthly fee of about $937 for AI-overview optimization services.
Taken together, the pricing benchmarks show several distinct patterns: monthly retainers are common but span a wide range; hourly rates differ sharply by provider type and geography; project fees depend heavily on the observed distribution; and established or larger providers tend to report higher prices. The figures come from the periods and sources identified above, so they work best as comparison points for interpreting a proposal rather than as a single standard price.
